Mahindra XUV500 SUV’s automatic gearbox version in the works!
Mahindra does offer a six speed automatic gearbox in the Scorpio SUV and when the Mahindra XUV500 SUV was launched at a cracker of a price tag last week, many expected the XUV500 to also feature an automatic gearbox. However, the Mahindra XUV500 is available only in a manual gearbox version with a six speed manual gearbox handling the gear shifting duties. This said, the Mahindra XUV500 SUV will indeed be available in automatic gearbox guise in the coming days.
Adding credence to this bit of information is the ambitious export target that Mahindra has in mind for the XUV500 SUV. This SUV will be sold across many continents ranging from Europe to South America. In markets abroad, automatic gearboxes are almost the de-facto standard across car models and for the XUV500 to succeed in developed markets, an automatic gearbox is something very essential. Mahindra already has presence on both the South African and the South American market and the XUV500 is expected to open up new markets for Mahindra in Europe and Australia.
In Australia, Mahindra sells its tractor range alongside the pick up version of the Scorpio. The Mahindra XUV500 SUV features a 2.2 Liter CRDe turbo diesel engine that Mahindra has actually borrowed from the Scorpio, but with a plethora of changes. The common rail turbo diesel engine on the XUV500 produces more power and torque than on the Scorpio. Peak power is rated at 140 Bhp while peak torque is 330 Nm. The Mahindra XUV500 SUV also represents Mahindra’s very first foray into the monocoque SUV segment and also Mahindra’s first ever SUV with a transversely mounted engine.
The XUV500 is available in three variants, the W6, W8 2WD and W8 AWD. The W6 variant which is priced at INR 10.8 Lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi forms the base variant of the SUV and is a front wheel drive version. The W8 2WD is the fully loaded front wheel drive version and is priced at INR 11.95 Lakhs ex-showroom Delhi while the W8 AWD is the top of the line all wheel drive variant which is priced at INR 12.88 Lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi. It has to be noted that these prices are introductory and are expected to go up in the coming months.
