The seemingly never ending labour strike at Maruti increases Swift waiting periods quite sharply!
The latest in the series of labour strikes that has engulfed embattled car maker Maruti Suzuki has dragged on for two whole weeks even an amicable solution is far out of sight. The strike which has had the Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant workers up in arms against the Maruti Suzuki management over demands for better conditions has resulted in production being severely disrupted at Manesar, a facility which produces the new Swift, the A-Star and the SX4.
The strike has also spread to neighboring production units like Suzuki Powertrain India and Suzuki Motorcycles India. Suzuki Powertrain India manufacturers gearbox components for many Maruti car models and the strike at this unit has meant that Maruti’s other production unit at Gurgaon has also been affected. All in all, Maruti is an automaker on its knees this festive season as it is simply not able to meet demand for its cars, due to the ongoing labour tussle.
The biggest loser for Maruti could be the Swift hatchback, for which Maruti Suzuki dealers across India have accepted almost 100,000 bookings. Prospective Swift owners’ patience will be wearing thin as dealers are reporting higher waiting periods already. The top end Maruti Swift ZDi is now commanding a waiting period of almost 6-8 months, which is a straight two month increase over the previous 4-6 month waiting period that the top end ZDi model of the Swift commanded.
What this inordinately long waiting period could mean is that Maruti Swift rivals like the Hyundai i20 Diesel, the Volkswagen Polo Diesel and the Toyota Liva Diesel could bag prospective Swift customers. Already Hyundai India is reporting a higher amount of bookings for its i20, perhaps due to the high waiting period that the Swift comes saddled with, while Tata Motors is upping capacity to meet increasing demand that could be generated due to Maruti’s labour tensions. For its part, Maruti has restarted partial production of the Swift at its Manesar plant with 350 cars being produced yesterday.

Maruti has catered to its customers with utmost care over the decades and just because of one particular incident we cannot write off such a iconic brand. I have complete faith that Maruti will ensure that all their outstanding commitments are met with at the earliest.
