The mouthwateringly priced, Maruti Eeco is Maruti’s new MPV for India

While we were expecting the APV to be the next MPV from the Maruti Suzuki stable, Maruti pulled off a fast one on us and instead launched its new Multipurpose vehicle(MPV) “Maruti Eeco” here at the Indian Auto Expo 2010 on Thursday. This new MPV, targeted primarily at large families is the facelifted version of the erstwhile Maruti Versa. Meanwhile, we brought you a steady stream of news concerning the Eeco Car in the past few days as well.

Maruti Suzuki Eeco MPV

Under the Bonnet, the new Maruti Eeco sports a 1.2L K-Series engine that it shares with the Maruti Suzuki Ritz. This engine while being 100cc smaller as compared to the Maruti Versa, meets the Bharat IV emission norms. while being more efficient. The new engine develops 73 bhp @ 6000 rpm and 104 Nm of torque at 3000 rpm and has a 5-speed gearbox.

While there was talk about Maruti coming out with a CNG and een an electric ersion of the EECO, Maruti’s CEO Shinzo Nakanishi, has just cleared the air by denying both the options in the near future. That, somewhat seals the deal for the time being with customers not having to wait and postpone their buying decisions expecting other fuel options.

Meanwhile, the Maruti Eeco will be available in two Flexi “Seating Options:

Five Seater
Seven Seater

“Maruti Suzuki engineers have developed the Eeco, its new powerful engine and the new transmission system to meet diverse consumer aspirations,” Shinzo Nakanishi, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, told reporters at the Auto Expo.

Maruti Eeco MPV Car Price:

This is where the competition will clearly be trumped. Maruti has stunned everybody by pricing the EECO at Rs. 2.59 lakh for the standard five seater, Rs. 2.89 lakh for the AC version and Rs. 2.71 lakh for the standard seven seater (ex-showroom Delhi). Well this could possibly mean the end of the Maruti Omni run in the Indian market. While Maruti is targeting the family car market, we expect the taxi segment to make a beeline to book the new Maruti EECO. The combination of the low price, good fuel economy and most importantly, Maruti’s terrific sales and service network will make the EECO an irresistable option for the cabbies.

The Maruti Eeco will cost about INR 3,30,000 In Jaipur for the 5 seater Eeco with AC. Please note that this is an estimated on-road price.

Coming to the Maruti Versa, this model was discontinued a few months before the Eeco’s launch.

While the Maruti Versa didn’t sell a lot due to the high pricing it initially came with, it is an extremely reliable, comfortable and capable car.

The huge space of the Versa is a huge boon for families and also for transporting goods, etc occasionally.
