Maruti Suzuki bets on stockyards in Bangalore and Nagpur to reduce waiting periods!
The country’s top car maker Maruti Suzuki is pulling out all stops to get its cars to customers as quickly as possible and the latest move in this regard is the setting up of stockyards at Bangalore and Nagpur. These stockyards will enable Maruti to reduce transit time as all of Maruti’s manufacturing units are present only in the northern part of India, spread around the National Capital Region(NCR). This means that cars take a long time to reach the far ends of the country, resulting in waiting periods further increasing.
For instance, the best selling new Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback commands a two month waiting period for the petrol variant while the diesel variant has waiting periods of over 6 months in many cases. The Maruti Dzire is another car which has long waiting periods for the diesel engined model and with Maruti having just launched the all new 2012 Dzire sedan just yesterday, waiting periods are set to go up further as the new Dzire has been priced lower than the outgoing model, which will be repositioned as a taxi special. The stockyards at Bangalore and Nagpur are expected to cut down some time from the waiting periods.
While the stockyard at Bangalore is already operational, the one at Nagpur will be functional very soon. Going forward, Maruti Suzuki also plans to set up stockyards in more regions of India so that the transit time is kept at a bare minimum to ensure quicker deliveries. Recently, Maruti signed a 3 year deal with Fiat India to source Multijet diesel engines for its cars. Maruti is also planning to set up a diesel engine manufacturing unit at its Gurgaon plant to meet the growing demand for its diesel engined models. All these measures, Maruti hopes will reduce waiting periods, especially for its diesel engined cars.
