Maruti Suzuki could add the CNG option to its best selling MPV, the Ertiga. According to an AutocarIndia report, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga CNG could be launched within the next 2-3 months. The addition of the CNG powered variant to the Ertiga line up is expected to give the petrol powered variant of the car a shot in the arm. The Ertiga is a top selling MPV in India and is Maruti Suzuki’s rival to the likes of the Toyota Innova and the Mahindra Xylo. Although the Ertiga is a size smaller than the Innova, the MPV’s compact dimensions have made it a favourite amongst car buyers in India.
Although specific details about the CNG powered Ertiga remain unknown at this point in time, we expect the 1.4 Liter K-Series petrol engine, good for 94 Bhp-130 Nm, to be used on the CNG version as well. In that light, the 1.4 Liter K-Series petrol motor could be adapted to become a CNG-petrol unit. As the petrol powered Ertiga is a relatively slow mover when compared to its diesel powered sibling, the addition of the CNG option could allow Maruti Suzuki to sell more K-Series petrol-CNG equipped Ertigas in the Indian car market.
The running costs of CNG is comparable to that of diesel and a CNG powered car costs lower to run than a petrol engined car. This lower running costs are expected to be the major selling point of the CNG powered Ertiga. Though CNG’s running costs are lower than petrol, the impediment to the large scale adoption of CNG as a fuel option of choice in Indian automobiles is the fact that the availability of CNG remains limited to the bigger cities of the country. This has resulted in CNG powered cars being limited to the bigger cities of the country.
Apart from its cost effective nature, CNG is also a cleaner burning fuel than petrol and diesel. In the coming years, expect more CNG stations to be set up across the country and this could result in a big boost in sales of CNG powered cars. Meanwhile, the top selling variants of the Ertiga are diesel powered, and feature the 1.3 Liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engine that outputs 90 Bhp-200 Nm. All models of the Ertiga sold in India come with a five speed manual gearbox as standard. The MPV is available in five seat and seven seat variants.
