Mercedes Benz B-Class Sports Tourer to break cover in India on the 19th of July, 2012
Mercedes Benz India will unveil the B-Class Sports Tourer on the 19th of July, 2012. The B-Class will be positioned as a sports tourer and will be the German luxury car brand’s least priced offering in India. The car is expected to generate big volumes for Mercedes Benz India even as the brand tries to fight its way back to the top. Currently, Mercedes Benz is the third largest luxury car maker in India, after BMW and Audi. Mercedes Benz will assemble the the B-Class Sports Tourer in India through the completely knocked down(CKD) at Chakan, off Pune.
However, the initial few cars are expected to arrive into India through the CBU route. Also, the 2012 B-Class could be initially available only with petrol engines, after which a range of turbo diesel engines arrive to boost the volumes. Price wise, the 2012 B-Class is expected to compete with the likes of the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3 crossovers. The B-Class will be aimed at younger car buyers, with its realtively affordable price being the carrot to entice the younger set into beginning an enduring relationship with the three pointed star and its promise of sporty luxury.
The Mercedes Benz B-Class, though measuring in at about 4.2 meters in length, will be quite spacious inside due to an intelligent and versatile space management on the interiors. The car will be able to seat five passengers in comfort and the space on the inside is said to rival many of the larger Mercedes Benz cars. In fact, the B-Class is positioned as a compact luxury MPV in the European market and that should give you an inkling on what to expect from this car. The 2012 B-Class MPV is based on the Mercedes Benz MFA platform with a front wheel drive layout being standard.
The car’s petrol engine is expected to be the 1.6 Liter turbocharged unit available in two states of tune, 120 Bhp and 155 Bhp. The turbo diesel engine which is expected to follow soon after, will be a 1.8 Liter four potter, also available in two states of tune, 108 Bhp and 135 Bhp. A choice of a 6 speed manual and a 7 speed dual clutch automatic transmission is expected on the 2012 B-Class. Expect a range of safety and creature comforts to be standard on the B-Class, befitting the three pointed star badge on the bonnet.
