Mercedes Benz E class under the NHTSA Scanner on Airbag Scare
2006 Mercedes Benz E Class
The National Highway Safety and Transportation Authority(NHTSA) is investigating complaints about some of the Mercedes Benz E Class cars’ steering airbag deployment system being faulty. The 2005 and 2006 models of the Mercedes Benz E Class models are under scrutiny for a wiring harness in the steering column that could be too short.
What this translates into is, when a driver raises the steering column to maximum height, the short length of the wiring harness could impede the deployment of the steering air bags in the event of a crash. This certainly can cause whiplash injuries at the mildest to death in the worst case scenario.
NHTSA has so far received 4 complaints of the wiring harness failure and while no injuries have been reported just as yet, Mercedes Benz could be staring at a recall involving about a 1,00,000 Mercedes Benz E Class cars. Stick around as we find out whether Indian models of the Mercedes Benz E Class also might be affected by the recall, if any.
