To arrest sliding sale, Mercedes Benz has lined up three big car launches for India in 2013. Of these, one car will be aimed at the entry level luxury car buyer, a buyer who is young yet wealthy enough to buy a Mercedes Benz car. Yes, we’re talking about the 2013 A-Class sports hatchback, a car that will serve as Mercedes Benz’s entry level car model, at a price close to INR 20 lakhs, making it the least priced Merc in India. The A-Class will join another big volume Merc, the B-Class sports tourer, which is already available in the Indian car market.
However, we have a new development concerning the B-Class sports tourer. While Mercedes Benz initially planned to assemble this car in India through the completely knocked down(CKD) route, word emerging suggests that the CKD assembly plans for the B-Class could be shelved. So, if this happens, we wonder whether Mercedes Benz will assemble the A-Class sports hatchback in India. So, this is something that is now an uncertainty regarding the A-Class sports hatchback. Meanwhile, These cars are based on the MFA architecture and are predominantly front wheel driven.
The cars will share engines and transmissions. We also expect the diesel variant of the B-Class to be launched in India during 2013 as the car is now available only with a petrol engine option and will need a turbo diesel motor under the hood for sales to pick up. Also, the A-Class is expected to be made available with a turbo diesel engine in addition to its turbo petrol motor. The other big launch in 2013 will be the facelifted 2014 E-Class sedan, which also happens to be the best selling Mercedes Benz car in India. The 2014 E-Class luxury sedan will be unveiled at Detroit 2013 and is expected to arrive into India in the second half of next year.
The other major car launch from Mercedes Benz India for 2013 will be the GL-Class SUV, an SUV that will sit above the M-Class model. The GL-Class SUV will be an all new model and will come with a major style job on the outside along with revamped insides. The 2013 GL-Class SUV is expected to be sold with a 3 Liter turbo diesel V6 engine producing about 250 Bhp of peak power and 600 Nm of peak torque. This SUV is expected to be assembled at Mercedes Benz India’s Pune plant through the completely knocked down(CKD) route.
