Is Mercedes-Benz preparing a hotter G63 AMG?

Mercedes-Benz is testing the hotter version of the famous G-Wagon and our friends at Autoevolution have spotted one of the test mules. The guys who took the picture report that the exhaust note suggested, there could be a V8 powering the beast which could only mean that this is the 2012 Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, or is it?

Rumours suggest that Mercedes-Benz is also planning an even extreme version of the G-Wagon in the form of the G65 AMG. As if the might of the 5.5 litre V8 was not enough Mercedes-Benz seems to have handed over the G-Wagon to the power-crazed AMG engineers who think anything less than 500 horsepower is for the faint hearted. So without wasting a single second the team rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They might come up with a V12 powered G-Wagon by the time they finish the project.

The same twin-turbocharged V12 that folks at AMG bolted to the awesome S65 AMG. The engine churns out more than 600 horsepower and could be the last hurrah as Mercedes-Benz prepares to phase out the G-Wagon. It is also believed that the current G55 AMG will be dropped for a powerful G63 AMG with a 6.3 litre V8 with 525 bhp on tap. So the model that was spotted testing could be the new G63 rather than a G55.

Whatever goes under the hood, it is going to much powerful than before enough to catapult the hunk of metal that is the G-Wagon from nought to 100 and onto a mind-boggling top speed. The technical bits powering the vehicle will be glorified by bulging wheel arches and wheels the size of trash can lids. Image a G-Wagon in black with shiny wheels burbling past you. Let us hope, the replacement to the famous G-Wagon would be as exciting as this one.
