We hear, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV lined up for a March 2012 launch!
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has been more than a year in its coming, and multiple incidents, like the numerous natural calamities of 2011, forced Mitsubishi India to postpone the launch more than once. Now, we’re hearing that March 2012 will be when the Pajero Sport will finally be launched. Hindustan Motors and Mitsubishi skipped the 2012 Auto Expo but informed us that the launches for 2012 will be on schedule. The Pajero Sport pretty much is the only car launch that Mitsubishi India might have lined up for 2012.
The Pajero Sport is a better, er, more modern looking version of the grand daddy SUV from Mitsubishi, the legendary Pajero. The Pajero Sport gets refreshed looks, newer interiors and in the international markets, a more up-to-date 2.5 liter turbo diesel engine pumping out 135 Bhp of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque. For the Indian market, Mitsubishi might debut the Pajero Sport with a five speed manual transmission although there exists a five speed automatic transmission in the Pajero Sport’s international line up. The Pajero Sport will be a seven seater and is expected to come with a 4X4 option.
The Pajero Sport will arrive into India in completely knocked down(CKD) kit form from Thailand. These CKD kits will be assembled at Mitsubishi’s Chennai assembly unit. The only way Mitsubishi can hope to sell the Pajero Sport in decent numbers is if they manage to price this SUV well. Competition in the premium SUV segment has now hotted up considerably, what with the best selling Toyota Fortuner SUV getting a facelift and the 2012 Chevrolet Captiva all set for a launch in the coming months. Ford too will join the party soon with the all new Endeavour. Amidst competition like this, the Pajero Sport will have its task cut out.

Pajero Sports’ CKD units will be assembled at the Tiruvallur (Tamil Nadu) plant owned by Hindustan Motors Ltd, which belongs to the CK Birla Group of industries. FYI, Mitsubishi Motors does not have any passenger automobile manufacturing plant in India. Mitsubishi’s Pajero, Montero, Outlander, Cedia, Lancer etc are manufactured and marketed in India by Hindustan Motors under a 1998 licence and as per a business agreement between the two companies.
