Cabbie Special: The Mercedes Benz E250CDI goes Econo
Mercedes Benz E250CDI Elegance
Fast, frugal and comfy now goes econo and we don’t like it. What Mercedes has essentially done with the classy Mercedes Benz E250CDI sedan is, they have bundled out a bunch of gadgetry to water down the hot status symbol of a Merc. Not so surprisingly, the price too gets a little chop to end up right at the INR 40 Lakh rupee mark with the E250CDI now priced at INR 40,20,000 ex-showroom, Delhi.
Before you get all excited, wait till you hear about the stuff you are going to miss on the E-Class. The LED daytime running lights go out and convectional halogen fog lamps come in, the brilliant bi-xenon headlights get scissored out in favor of the age old halogen headlamps, headlight washers go, the sunroof goes and even the alloys get older looking ones from the S350. Moving on to the interiors, the steering wheel you, er your driver clutches won’t have the opulent wooden inserts anymore and the leather upholstery ensconcing your behind has seen a downgrade to a dull gray.
Thankfully the stonker of a diesel engine and everything else remains untouched on the new version whose trim is named Classic by Mercedes Benz. What piques us no end is the fact that all these deletions have resulted in a price drop of a mere INR 1.36 Lakh, which simply looks like a bad bargain for the sheer number features that go out of the window.
Thus, this watered down Merc is more of a cabbie special and that isn’t something too pleasing to hear, especially from a ultra luxe brand like Mercedes Benz. On second thoughts, even the cabbies will feel shortchanged.
