New Mistubishi Lancer in the pipeline
2010 Mitsubishi Lancer
In the noughties, Mitsubishi tied up with Hindustan Motors, and then went on to make quite a big Indian splash with the Mitsubishi Lancer, which once upon a time was the de-facto executive luxury sedan for under INR 10 Lakhs. The de-facto tag was challenged by other car makers and in due course of time the Lancer disappeared into oblivion as the competition came up with better cars with better features.
Oh yes, the Cedia came in but when did I last see that car on the streets? Needless to say, the high price and the dismal promotions ensured that though a good car the Cedia was, it bombed miserably. The HM-Mitsubishi combine simply were too lethargic to capitalize on the Lancer’s success and hence, the Mitsubishi Lancer now stands totally discontinued in BS4 cities.

Finally Mitsubishi India seems to have woken up from it’s slumber and is now charting out an aggressive course that it hopes will put it back into contention, in the great Indian car market. To spearhead this initiative it plans to bring in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo-X as a brand builder. Unlike other showboaters, the Evo-X is expected to come at a price close to INR 40 Lakhs and that, if not anything will ensure that it is bought by more than just showboaters.
After the Evo-X, Mitsubishi India will launch a host of modes including a diesel and 7 seater version of the Outlander, the Pajero Sport and also the good ol’ Pajero in BS4 guise. But all these cars are at the higher end of the market where volumes remain a trickle. What Mitsubishi India desperately needs is a bread and butter car that can outsell the very successful first generation Lancers it sold in India. It seems that Mitsubishi India knows this better than us and hence, we will see a brand new Lancer, both stylistically as well as feature spec and engine wise.

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer 1.8 Mivec Petrol Engine
The all new Mitsubishi Lancer which might imbibe it’s looks from the Evo-X promises to be one gorgeous and sporty looking car. Now, what is show without the go? So, a 140 Bhp, 1.8 liter Mivec Petrol is expected to give the all new Lancer enough poke to thumb all the C-segmenters and make sure that the sporty tag is justified. Now, that much power will ensure that the Lancer will do the nought to hundred figure in a very quick 10 seconds and go on to do close to 200 Ks.
That is some scintillating performance and we hope that Mitsubishi price it at Honda City levels rather than Toyota Corolla levels, the petrol Lancer at least.Yeah, I’m coming to that. To make sure that the new Mitsubishi Lancer will have a fighting chance at the hustings, a 2 liter diesel mill is a strong possibility.

According to the word on the web, this dieseler might come with a Volkswagen engine but I’m definitely not buying that. Why would Mitsubishi run to Volkswagen for a diesel engine when they have a great 2 liter option that is doing business in the UK versions of the Mitsubishi Lancer? So there, I’m hinging on the 2 liter DI-D diesel that produces a peppy 138 Bhp and a prodigious 310 of torque.
How I hope that this diesel comes into India and if it does manage to, the Skodas, Toyotas of the world be forewarned. Talking of which, the Mitsubishi Lancer in diesel guise could be priced northwards of INR 12 Lakhs. Een at that price, Mitsubishi India will definitely hae a strong contender in the new Lancer. That is, only if they stop their endless procrastinating and do bring the Lancer in quickly. What say, Mitsubishi?

hi when can i expect this new lancer in india
The 2.0 litre 138bhp diesel engine you mention IS the Volkswagen unit. Mitsubishi don’t sell their own diesel engine at this displacement, well not in the UK market anyway. However, MM have launched an innovative VVT 1.8 diesel engine in the UK market in their ASX crossover in the last few months. Because they share platforms, this engine will go into the Lancer and replace the 2.0 litre VAG diesel unit. It’s just a question of when..
Does anyone know when the new Lancer wiil be launched in India?
its dem good car waiting for it …
