Diminishing sales due to other premium hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Polo giving the Skoda Fabia a real tough time at the hustings has now finally forced Skoda India to indulge in some affirmative action to save the already dismal sales from plummeting even further. The Skoda Fabia, the first premium hatchback the country ever saw, is getting a mid life makeover and this time around, Skoda Auto India has gone a little ahead than just deliver a nip here and a tuck there. The 2011 Skoda Fabia gets brand new headlamps and a grille job to look nattier than the outgoing version. This, Skoda India hopes will give the built-like-a-tank Fabia just enough oomph to get folks inside Skoda showrooms.

But, we’re pretty bored with the nips and tucks, aren’t we, as the Fabia is simply getting long in the tooth. Skoda India also seems to think on the same lines and hence we have two new engines finding their way into the 2010 Skoda Fabia’s engine bay to make things a tad more interesting. So, the clattery 3 pot Pump Dusse oil burner which Skoda had to dump as the Bharat Stage 3 norms kicked in now gets replaced by the 1.2 Liter CRDI Diesel that the new Fabia will now share with the Volkswagen Polo.

While the engine with it’s modest power and torque figures of 75 Bhp and 180 Nm won’t make your heart beat race high, you’ll certainly be at home puttering around town and taking that occasional road trip down the expressway. What will actually make you smile is the tight wad of Gandhibacks you’ll save each time you stop at the sticky fuel end of the fuel station. To make things that bit racier, Skoda is also bringing in a thirstier but a much more exciting-to-drive Fabia in the form of the Fabia 1.6 Petrol.

This naturally aspirated petrol motor, a straight lift off from he Polo’s engine bay will ensure that the folks who want their Fabias shooting away, ahead of the pack at every christmas light will have their way with 105 horses to propel them ahead. Now, all that shove will come with a price that you will have to pay every time you refuel but if you love revving a nice, powerful petrol engine to it’s redline, you wouldn’t mind too much. The 2011 Skoda Fabia will see a launch on 12th October, in Mumbai. Team ICB will be there to catch the new Skoda Fabia being unveiled.

Stick around for some up close shots and videos of what the Skoda Fabia facelift brings to the table.
