Toyota Pulls The Plug on New Fortuner SUV Bookings in 2010

Toyota Fortuner

Toyota Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner was a massive success even before the big, burly SUV made it to Indian shores. How else can you explain the 2000+ bookings that Toyota Kirloskar Motors garnered even before the Toyota Fortuner went into serial production at Toyota’s Bidadi plant off Bangalore? If that doesn’t cut the ice for you, how about this for success, the Fortuner commanded and still commands premiums of INR 3 Lakh+.

Toyota has been struggling to keep up with demand for this big, bruiser of an SUV and once the backlog of Fortuner bookings crossed 6000 units, Toyota has promptly pulled the plug on fresh Toyota Fortuner bookings. Currently Toyota produces about 950 Fortuners per month, a straight 90% jump from the 500 units per month it started the Fortuner production with.

Bookings will reopen once the backlog gets reduced to about 3000 units. Meanwhile, the Toyota Fortuner’s current waiting period is about six months and we aren’t expecting that figure to go southward any time too soon.
