Nissan-Ashok Leyland LCV alliance to spawn the NV200 Multi Utility Vehicle

When Nissan joined hands with Indian truck maker Ashok Leyland, the air was thick with the news of yet another small car. Thankfully, it isn’t so and instead we’ll see an LCV borne out of this alliance. That said, both Nissan and Ashok Leyland haven’t ruled out the LCV platform spawning a $5,000 car sometime later.

The LCV in question is the Nissan NV200 which is offered in two guises. One guise is the people mover version, which Nissan will sell under its brand name. The load carrier version of the NV200 however will be sold under the Ashok Leyland brand. The NV200 will sport a 1.5 liter diesel powerplant that generates about 85 horses.

In a significant departure from the norm in the UV space, the NV200 will feature a monocoque chassis as opposed to the body-on-ladder frame that most UVs make do with. This factor certainly will make the front wheel drive NV200 a class leader in the comfort stakes as the monocoque chassis offers great rigidity while not compromising on the crucial ride quality.

The NV200 will be priced at about INR 7-9 Lakhs for the people mover version while the load carrier will see a lower price. At these pricing levels, the NV200 will take on the hugely successful Tata Winger, a UV which has taken the market by storm.
