Official: 2012 Premier Rio Compact SUV gets the 1.3 Liter Multijet turbo diesel engine

While Premier Limited has confirmed that the Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engine will soon power the Rio Compact SUV, we now have official specifications of this engine. The engine will be a slightly detuned version, perhaps in the least powerful state of tune globally, with a 72 Bhp peak power output at 4,000 rpm and an 183 Nm torque output between 1,800 rpm to 2,400 rpm. The lower power and torque outputs may be attributed to the lack of an intercooler. This engine will be supplied to Premier by Fiat India.

The Multijet engined compact SUV, that measures under 4 meters in length qualifies for lower excise duties and is thus expected to be priced very competitively, at about INR 60,000 over the BS3 Diesel version of the Rio. Apart from the new Multijet diesel engine that makes it BS4 compliant, the SUV does not come with any other change. Dimensionally, the Rio SUV remains bog similar to the BS3 variants with its ground clearance measuring a tall 200 mm. Currently, the 2012 Rio Compact SUV comes in petrol as well as diesel engined versions.

While the 1.2 Liter MPFI petrol engine is BS4 compliant, the Peugeot TUD5 turbo diesel engine manages to only meet BS3 norms. This has meant that the Rio Diesel cannot be sold in BS4 cities of India, which comprise of the Metros and most other big cities. However, the arrival of the BS4 diesel engine on the Rio, in the form of the 1.3 Liter Multijet diesel engine means that the compact SUV can now be sold in BS4 cities. The punchy and fuel efficient 1.3 Liter Multijet turbo diesel engine is expected to give Rio sales a big shot in the arm. The top end variant is expected to get ABS and EBD as part of safety equipment.

The Premier Rio SUV is a rebadged version of the Zotye compact SUV, which is based on the Daihatsu Terios. Premier Limited imports kits from China and assembles the SUV at its Pune factory. The Rio is the first compact SUV in the Indian car market and can be credited for kickstarting the trend of sub 4 meter SUVs, the likes of which are only going to increase in the coming years. The BS4 compliant Multijet diesel engined Premier Rio compact SUV is expected to be launched in the next few months.
