Here are the first official images of the Volkswagen Up! five door hatchback!
Move over the patent images of the Volkswagen CrossUp!, here is the real deal, the five door version of the Volkswagen Up! city hatchback and you get what you see. The five door version of the Volkswagen Up! is what the Teuton brand will sell in emerging countries. India is not yet a certainty though as Volkswagen is said to be in the process of figuring out whether it will be able to whittle down the costs of the Up! to levels that would make sense for it to sell well in the Indian market. Notably, the Maruti A-star is a car that the Volkswagen Up! hatchback will take on in the European markets.
The five door version of the Volkswagen Up! is identical to the three door version in all aspects except for the different doors. While the three door version has larger doors on the flanks, the five door version has smaller ones to accommodate the extra two doors. The five door version of the Up! is also pricier than the three door version although the equipment and technical specifications remain bog similar to the three door model. This car will begin selling in Germany from March 2012, with a phased launch for other European markets in the next few months.
The 5 door Volkswagen Up! ca seat four adults and is pricier than the 3 door version by about $600, taking the price of the car to about 13,300 US dollars, which is well over 5 lakh rupees. This cost is what will be the biggest concern for Volkswagen India as the Volkswagen Up! at these prices will simply not find any takers in India. Plenty of localization will have be the only way out for VW India if the Up! has to be priced at the Maruti A-Star levels. Engines options for the 5 door Up! remain the same 1 liter, three pot units with 59 Bhp in 75 Bhp variants. Volkswagen did not showcase the Up! at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo.
