We have a bunch of announcements made by Mercedes Benz India, on the sidelines of the Performance Drive Event organized at Chakan, off Pune. Here we go. Mercedes Benz India’s launch blitzkrieg for 2013 will begin in February with the flagship SUV model, the G63 AMG off roader hitting Indian roads. The SUV will be a CBU import, straight from Germany and will be targeted at serious off road enthusiasts given the fact that no alternative exists for this very special off roader. The G63 AMG will hold the distinction of being the most powerful SUV to be sold in India given the AMG badge on the bonnet. Expect prices to begin at over 1 crore rupees, guaranteeing exclusivity.
The looks of the G63 though are old school and don’t be too surprised to people calling it a modified Trax Gurkha or even for that matter a modified Tata Sumo. True blue off roading enthusiasts wouldn’t really mind this given that the boxy design of the G63 AMG adds plenty of character apart from being time less, stuff that cannot be said of the new crop of SUVs, which keep trans-morphing themselves into different designs every other year, accelerating their ageing process. The G63 AMG will have a 5.5 Liter V8 twin turbo petrol engine nestling under its hood.
At its peak, this engine will output 544 Bhp and 760 Nm, endowing the G63 AMG with some visceral performance, performance that will shame many a sportscar. The 0-100 Kph sprint will be dispatched in 5.4 seconds while top speed is an electronically limited 210 Kph. The prodigious power and torque generated by the V8 motor will be transmitted to all four wheels of the G63 AMG through a 7 speed automatic gearbox. For the 2013 model year, the G63 AMG gets a nip here and a tuck there in terms of its looks and also gains start-stop and brake energy regeneration to stretch that liter of dinosaur remains that extra bit.
Later in the year, Mercedes Benz India will launch another SUV, this time a lesser priced-higher volume model. We’re talking about the all new 2013 Mercedes Benz GL-Class, an SUV that will be pitted straight at the Audi Q7. The GL-Class will be launched in June, and will initially take the CBU route with CKD assembly to follow soon after. This is exactly the strategy Mercedes Benz India followed with the 2012 ML-Class as well. The Mercedes Benz GL-Class SUV will be powered by a 3 Liter V6 turbo diesel engine as standard. This engine will be mated to a 7 speed automatic gearbox.
Expect pricing to be close to the Audi Q7, well under 70 lakhs. The GL-Class SUV gets revamped styling, refreshed interiors and a host of other improvement. The Noise, Vibration and Harshness(NVH) levels of the 2013 GL-Class SUV see a once over with Mercedes Benz asserting that this SUV is aimed at being matching the S-Class’ luxury levels in the luxury SUV space. The 2013 GL-Class will have room for 7 adults. Along with luxury, the 2013 Mercedes Benz GL-Class SUV will also get a host of safety features that are cutting edge in the SUV space.
