A new segment of compact SUVs has been introduced to the Indian customer in the form of the Ford EcoSport. The new mini-crossover was unveiled on the eve of the 11th Delhi Auto Expo. The global unveiling that was held at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi was attended by press members from all over the globe. The new Ford EcoSport has been unveiled as part of Ford’s new ‘One Ford’ strategy and is among eight other products that Ford has planned for India.
The compact SUV segment is the place where we can expect a lot of competition in the near future. This is the segment where very few cars are available at this moment of time and one of them is the Premier Rio. General Motors could also be thinking on the lines of Premier and Ford. General Motors will unveil the Opel/ Vauxhall Mokka at the Geneva auto show later this year. The Mokka is a compact SUV similar to the EcoSport and boasts small capacity economical engines.

The Opel Mokka measures 4.28 meters in length and will be available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations. The compact SUV will also be available with a six-speed automatic transmission, perfect for city driving. General Motors is also proposing a 1.7 litre CDTI diesel engine with an output of 130 bhp. Also, two petrol engines including one turbocharged would also be on offer in the European-spec Mokka.
That said, the Ford EcoSport that will be coming to India will have a 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine. The three-cylinder turbocharged engine develops a healthy 170 Nm of torque at just 1300-4500 rpm. This low end grunt helps the EcoSport manage decent fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Finally, we could expect the Open/Vauxhall Mokka arrive on Indian shores under the Chevrolet badge and a new name perhaps.
