Peugeot India breaks ground in Sanand, Gujarat; Construction to begin soon!

Earlier today, French automaker and the latest entrant to the Indian car market, Peugeot, carried out the ground breaking or Bhoomi Puja ceremony at the factory site  Sanand, Gujarat. This marks Peugeot’s official entry into the India’s most industrialized state, Gujarat, which has seen a slew of big ticket investments in the automotive sector over the past couple of years.  Peugeot India follows Ford, which also had a ground breaking ceremony in Gujarat a couple of months ago for its second manufacturing plant in India.

The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki will also set shop in Gujarat very soon. Coming back to Peugeot India foray into Gujarat, it marks the second coming for the French brand into India, after the botched first coming when Peugeot teamed up wit Premier Automobiles Limited(PAL) to launch the Peugeot 309 petrol and diesel sedans. Though the Peugeot 309 Sedan was a good product in itself, the car bombed at the hustings due to troubles that Peugeot had with its Indian partner. Now though, Peugeot is going it alone in India.

The Peugeot India plant at Sanand, Gujarat will come up on 600 acres and will cost the French automaker 4,000 crorerupees to set up. The plant is expected to provide employment to no less than 5,000 people even as the ancillary units coming up around the plant will open up even more employment opportunities to the locals. Peugeot’s first product for India could be the 508 Sedan followed by a hatchback, which could be the recently unveiled Peugeot 208 Hatchback even as Peugoet has been testing the 207 Hatchback quite extensively in and around Pune.

The Peugeot 508 Sedan is expected to roll out in 2012 even as Peugeot India plans to display its products at the upcoming 2012 Indian Auto Expo. Meanwhile, here’s word from Vincent Rambaud, Director General of Peugeot, who had this to say from the sidelines of the ground breaking ceremony in Peugeot’s factory land at Sanand, Gujarat.

I take this opportunity to reiterate and reassure you of the longstanding commitment and dedication that we devote to this project. Peugeot will grow together with you by bringing the best of its passion, know how and technology to incredible India, vibrant Gujarat and to all those involved in making our journey successful.
