French car maker Peugeot is all set to make a re-entry into the Indian car market. Peugeot came to the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo to display some pretty serious hardware including the 904 HDi Le Mans race car. Alongside the racing car was the 508 sedan which will soon make its debut in India. The 508 is expected to be priced above Rs 20 lakh and will take on the likes of the Honda Accord and Skoda Superb. That said, Peugeot also plans to introduce the 208 hatchback. Now according to some reports, Peugeot is also planning to introduce a compact SUV based on the new 208 hatchback.

We think, this new compact crossover might as well be the next offering of the French car maker in India after the 508 sedan and the 208 hatchback. What makes us think that? The launch of the Ford EcoSport will open up a new market segment in the country. The compact SUV segment is what Ford is targeting with its EcoSport. The concept seems very practical for the crowded roads of India. Also, the high ground clearance and decent off-road ability means, the car can tackle almost all Indian roads.

Having said that, Peugeot will be monitoring the performance of the Ford EcoSport when it is introduced into the market. The decision to launch the 208 crossover in India could rest on the success or failure of the Ford EcoSport. Team ICB was at the global unveiling of the Ford EcoSport on the even of the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo. We loved the car as did most of the members of the press. The launch was attended by members of the media from all over the world. Alan Mullaly President and CEO Ford Motor Company was also present for occasion.

The fact that Ford chose the city of New Delhi as the venue to unveil the product, says it all. India is one the biggest markets for Ford and by unveiling the EcoSport in India, Ford has sent a clear message to the world that, India plays a big part in the growth of the brand and the car maker is committed to offer products that will satisfy the needs and aspirations of the people of India.
