Playing catch up, Toyota to finally jump onto the turbopetrol and direct injection bandwagon!

Uncharacteristically, the Japs have been slow in latching onto the direct injection and turbo petrol technology. Across the pond, even Hyundai and Kia have made deep inroads into turbo petrol engine technology while the Japanese firms like Honda and Toyota have stuck to hybrid technology as their big growth areas. Hybrids, though becoming ever popular are still nowhere as widely used as turbocharged internal combustion engine. Honda, a few months ago announced its push into turbopetrol power and close on the heels of Honda’s announcement, we have Toyota jumping onto the turbopetrol and direct injection bandwagon.

Toyota could debut direct injection technology as early as next year in Japanese Domestic Models(JDM), after which a global roll out is to be expected. Turbo petrol engine technology is also expected to find it way into Toyota cars very soon. The benefits of these technologies, as we have extolled time and again is well known. Turbocharging uses exhaust gases to bump up power and fuel economy. As a result, tail pipe emissions fall by a big chunk. Since plenty of torque is available lower down the rev range, lesser gear shifting by driving the torque wave means that fuel economy too goes up.

Direct injection also results in fuel saving and lesser emissions as the fuel is injected directly into the cylinder head where it burns more cleanly, decreasing wastage of fuel as well as unburnt gases existing out of the tail pipe. In India, only one mass market car, the Fiat Line T-Jet comes with a turbo petrol engine. The whole complement of turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing will arrive into India when the Ford EcoSport will be launched in late 2012. The EcoSport crossover will feature a 1 liter Ford EcoBoost turbopetrol engine with variable valve timing an direct injection.
