2011 Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept: Porky Porkers go Green at Geneva
The world is going green and the so far untouched super car territory is showing more than a few signs of following suit. We had Lamborghini hit the green spot, Ferrari followed suit and now Porkers want to stop flatulating noxiously, to end up looking green and, ahem, mean.
Supercar fanatics may call it sacrilege, but we, choose to call it evolution. Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, let’s present to you the latest supercar screaming, “Take me home to your mom” the Porsche Spyder 918 Hybrid Concept.
Ok, we overdid the mom part but even otherwise, we’re pretty certain that hordes of supercar nuts will be more than a little miffed at supercars emitting splotches of green from their backsides. But, in this case, we aren’t going to bet big on that.
Getting back on track, things aren’t all that gloomy. They just can’t be, what with 500, er 718 thoroughbred Stuttgart stallions waiting to be unleashed. You heard right. While Porsche has cut back on the flatulence, it thankfully hasn’t done so with the pork on your plate.
So, you get a high-revving 3.4-litre V8 that pumps out 500 horsepower and axle mounted electric motors that together produce 218, very quiet horses. Typically Porsche, a seven-speed PDK transmission transmits all the horses to terra firma.
The good news is that you can choose to tell the electric motors to shove off and make do just with pure dino power or go even faster with a little bit of help from electricity. The Spyder Hybrid comes with four different driver selectable drive modes: The E-Drive mode is for running the car under electric power alone, with a range of up to 25km, the Hybrid mode uses both the electric motors and the combustion engine, the Sport Hybrid mode uses both drive systems, with the focus on performance, and the Race Hybrid mode is for pure performance, with the highest standard of driving dynamics on the track.
So, there, for once petrolheads can grin ear to ear with the greens not feeling, well, green.
