Porsche has confirmed plans of an entry level sports convertible. The car which will be a modern day version of the 550 Spyder Porsche made between 1953 and 1956. Porsche boss Mathias Mueller told a German newspaper that the automaker will in fact make the baby Boxster. The new car although, being poised to become the modern day version of the famous 550 Spyder, will not have ant retro design cues. Thus, it will purely be an all new Porsche for all those James Dean fans.

The old Porsche 550 Spyder was the car in which hollywood legend, James Dean was killed. The actor was killed in a crash involving his newly acquired Porsche 550 Spyder and the rest is history. The new car is expected to be mid-engines similar to the current Porsche Boxster and will be based on Audi’s R4 Roadster platform which is also a car that the German automaker is planning for the future. The engine that will go into the new baby Boxster is suspected to be a four-cylinder boxer engine.

Autocar sources report that the new engine could have a capacity of 2.5 litres and will be the same engine that will also go in the new Cayman and the perhaps the 911. A turbocharged version of the engine could be able to put out 360 horsepowers. The new baby Boxster will be placed below the standard Boxster making it the new entry-level Porsche but, this doesn’t mean it won’t have what other Porsche’s have to offer. Now, the next generation Boxster is believed to get a twin-turbocharged version of the four cylinder mill.

Porsche will also be launching the new 911 soon thus embarking on quest to upgrade all the cars in its range. The company is also planning a new supercar that will slot in between the Porsche 911 GT2 RS and the Porsche 918 Spyder supercar. That said, Porsche believes that the new baby Boxster could attract those who wished to own the James Dean 550 Spyder and with a price lower than the standard Boxster, it could well be a hit.
