Porsche culls the sub-Boxster project for now; Mulls new supercar to sit above the 911!
Just yesterday, we carried a story about Mercedes Benz rumoredly coming up with the SLV AMG, a car that could take on the Boxsters and Caymans of the world. On the other end of the spectrum, Porsche wanted to make the brand even more affordable with a sub-Boxster sports car that the automaker planned to bring on roads in 2014. That project, we learn has been pt on freeze for the time being as Porsche thinks that a such a car would need a new generation of customers. So, the sub-Boxster project could be restarted many years from now when Porsche feels that the market is right for such a product.
Meanwhile, Porsche would now focus its energies on creating an all new supercar. Designed to sit in between the iconic and bread and butter earner, the Porsche 911 and the 918 Spyder, this sportscar is what Porsche will be putting its energies into. The new sportscar from Porsche could be priced between 300,000 to 400,000 Euros and sit above both the 911 and the 911 GT2 in terms of price positioning. On when this supercar from Porsche will be launched commercially is something that remains unknown at this point in time.
That said, luxury and sportscar brands are increasingly looking towards creating lesser priced products, but products that still manage to retain the DNA of the cars whose branding they ride upon. Huge masses of people in countries like India, Brazil and China are rapidly moving into prosperity and these are segments that the lower priced range of sportscars from iconic brands seek to tap into. We’ve just seen that happen in the motorcycle segment, where legendary brands like Ducati and Harley Davidson have come up with cut price models for the Indian market. It is only a matter of time before the carmakers join this brigade.
