Porsche’s Panamera will get a hybrid powertrain come June. The 3.0 litre V6 of the Panamera has been mated with an electric motor that generates 44 bhp. At least it will help you save a few drops of prehistoric juice now that it costs Rs. 65 for a litre. The European Union is to pass a law that will obligate all car manufacturers to achieve average CO2 emissions for all cars which the car manufacturers have rejected. However, we do see a change of mood which seems to have prompted car makers to introduce new hybrids in place of gas guzzling barges.

The Porsche Panamera S Hybrid boasts of bieng the most environmentally friendly of all the sports saloon. It produces just 159 grams of CO2 per kilometer beating the likes of the diesel-hybrid Jaguar XJ and BMW 7 Series. The hybrid system of the Panamera includes an electric motor and batteries. The nickel metal hydride batteries can store enough energy to pull the car along at 37 mph after which the 3.0 litre V6 kicks in. The performance is also not that bad with 60 mph coming in just 6 sec. The Panamera S Hybrid can do 168 mph which impressive for a so-called hybrid.

Prices for the Panamera S Hybrid start at £86,146 in the UK which is more than the 4S but you get features like 19 inch wheels and air suspension which is standard on the more expensive Turbo. Porsche will be launching the Panamera in India in the near future. Will the Indian line-up include the S Hybrid? Only time will tell.
