End of the road for Renault Logan in India

Mahindra Logan

Mahindra Logan

Renault-Nissan had a licencing deal with Mahindra & Mahindra which will be terminated with the dropping of the Logan in mid 2011. Renault-Nissan has already set up shop in the country which was marked by the launch of the Micra hatchback, which to be fair, was not as popular as the company might have expected. The reasons for this were fairly simple, uncompetitive pricing and lack of proper sales and service network.

Mahindra & Mahindra still have the rights for the product and will be producing the car in India, however with a Mahindra badge. According to Business Standard the company could make changes to the Logan and Renault might also provide the transmission systems and engine.

“Logan would not be a part of our product portfolio in India. We do not plan to bring the car here again,” said Jerome Stoll, Executive Vice-President, Renault SA.

What we can understand is that Mahindra might opt to completely relaunch the product with a new name under its own badge thus adding it to its Indian portfolio. The car will offer customers an option in the budget end of the mid-sized sedan market.
