Rumor: Ford India planning to launch the EcoSport on the 4th of March 2013?

While we know that the EcoSport’s launch is imminent in the next couple of weeks, we haven’t yet got official word from Ford India, confirming the exact launch date of what has turned out to be one of the most anticipated car launches of the year in India. A rumour tracing its origin to TopGearIndia asserts that the EcoSport will be launched on the 4th of March 2013 in Delhi. Now, we’re definitely surprised at this launch date as it is barely 4 days away, not to mention the fact that we have a weekend coming in between the rumoured launch date. So, take this rumour with a fistful of salt.

According to the report on TopGear, the only thing coming in between the launch of the EcoSport is India is the Union Budget of 2013, which will be announced tomorrow. Most auto makers are sitting tight and waiting for the budget, which is expected to have a fair share of announcements for the auto industry in India. So, the whole idea of the EcoSport’s launch being slated for a time frame after the budget makes a bunch of sense. However, Ford launching the EcoSport in Delhi on the 4th of March seems a little far fetched at this point in time due to the limited time between the budget and the launch date. Perhaps, a special preview could be in order on that date rather than a full blown launch.

Whatever be the case, our sources have confirmed to us that the EcoSport’s launch will happen in March 2013. So, we’re pretty near to the real thing considering the other positive factors such as the arrival of the EcoSport demo cars into Ford dealerships in India. Heavy localization and the sub-4 meter length is expected to give Ford India enough ammo to price the EcoSport very competitively. A sub INR lakh rupee price tag isn’t out of contention for the base petrol model of the EcoSport. If that price materializes, the Ford EcoSport could do to B+ segment hatchbacks what the Mahindra XUV500 Crossover did to C+ segment hatchbacks in India.
