Rumor: The Honda Brio and Jazz hatchbacks could be powered by a 1.2 Liter, three cylinder i-DTEC diesel engine!

Late last year at the Tokyo Motor Show, Honda pulled the wraps off their brand new 1.6 liter diesel engine, which the Japanese automaker had mainly developed to power the Honda Civic sedan, a car that is expected to be launched in India with the new diesel engine. The turbocharged diesel engine using common rail direct injection displacing 1.6 liters, produced a peak power of 120 Bhp and a peak torque of 300 Nm. The engine was developed by a bunch of Ex-Formula1 engineers who were drafted by Honda into the diesel engine development team, as the Japanese automaker found itself on the back foot, with other automakers overtaking it with products powered by diesel engines.

This engine is said to form the base of a new 1.2 liter diesel engine, which will be a downsized variant of the 1.6 liter engine. To go with the downsizing, the 1.2 liter i-DTEC engine will get a cylinder less. The three cylinder, 1.2 liter diesel engine is expected to power the Honda Brio and the Jazz hatchbacks. Currently, both the Honda Brio and Jazz come with 1.2 Liter i-VTEC petrol engines. Like the 1.6 Liter i-DTEC engine, expect the 1.2 Liter unit to also produce class leading torque and fuel economy figures. Other details about this 1.2 Liter i-DTEC diesel engine remains unknown at the moment.

Late last week, we carried a story about Honda possibly outfitting the Brio with the 1.2 Liter i-DTEC engine by the end of 2012. Honda SIEL Cars India denied this development and asserted that the Brio diesel will not be launched in 2012. So, the new 1.2 Liter i-DTEC diesel engine might take some more time to arrive into India, although the Brio and Jazz with diesel engines are very distinct possibilities given that Honda desperately needs diesel power to survive in a market like India, where diesels have been comprehensively outselling petrol engined cars.

By the time Honda brings diesel engines to its hatchbacks, the there might be a trend reversal due to govt’s policies. Who knows petrol may still be a cheaper alternative.

Coming… Coming…. Coming… When? Honda doesn’t speak a single word about this. Only others do speak.
