2012 Seat Mii 5 door hatchback unveiled!

Coming close on the heels of the Volkswagen Up! five door hatchback and the Skoda CitiGo 5 door hatchback, Spanish automaker and Volkswagen subsidiary, Seat, has come up with its own iteration of the 5 door hatchback. Based on the Volkswagen Up! hatchback, the Seat Mii 5 door hatchback will sell in the Spanish home market. Like Czech automaker Skoda, the Spanish Seat sit below Volkswagen in terms of positioning and price. The Seat Mii hatchback, being a rebadged and restyled Volkswagen Up! will share the platform and engines with the Up!.

The Seat Mii gets a thoroughly restyled front end with new headlamps, a new grille and new bumpers up front, that distinguishes it from the CitiGo and the Up!. On the rear too, the restyling continues with different tail lamps and a hatch lid. The engine options though, will continue to be the frugal and low emission, three cylinder, 1 liter petrol engines. These engines will be available in two states of tune 59 Bhp and 75 Bhp. The engine will be mated to a five speed manual transmission or an automatic gearbox.  The Seat Mii will also get a start-stop system and regenerative braking.

While the Volkswagen Up! and the Skoda CitiGo will get all-electric variants, no such plans have not been announced for the Seat Mii hatchback just as yet. However, like the CitiGo and the Up!, the Mii also will have room for four adults and is designed primarily as a frugal city car that is not just affordable to run, but is quite affordable to own as well. Sometime ago, there was some talk of Volkswagen bringing its budget brand, Seat, to India. We’re yet to hear about any progress on that front as Volkswagen is grappling with the issue of bringing down costs by a good margin to make the Up! commercially viable and well priced for the Indian market.

If Volkswagen manages to arrive at a good price for the Up!, perhaps the Up! and the CitiGo could make it to India. Seat Mii is a far fetched possibility as of now.

    Cheers,

Jay, don’t you think we had enough of this…Micra/Pulse, Vento/Rapid and now Up!/Citigo? Up! and Citigo would be entry level cars, and what type of people would buy them? For a person with moderate income, the choice would be a reliable car, with good reputation of service/spares aka Maruti or maybe an odd Hyundai. Would a small town guy travel hundreds kms to reach the nearest service station of Skoda/VW? Even if they sell their cars in big cities only, then they may not volume sellers. I think these companies should restrict themselves to premium cars only.
