Skoda Auto will officially launch the hotter version of the Laura, the Skoda Laura RS in India on the 31st of August, 2011. As we all know, the RS badge on a Skoda is an acronym for Rally Sport. The RS is not new to India a the Octavia was the first car to come to India in the RS avataar. Driving enthusiasts loved this car for its peppy 1.8 litre turbocharged petrol engine that hauled the car to a top speed of 223 kph which in its days was the fastest sedan in its category.

The old Skoda Octavia RS was a speed machine for the enthusiasts who cared about the 0-100 kph times more than the number of fuel stops. The car was also known for its superb dynamic abilities as well. The Skoda Laura was actually the car that replaced the Octavia in other markets but, in India, Skoda decided to continue the Octavia for a while before fazing it out. The Laura has been with us for a long time now and the one car missing still was the crisp RS version of the Laura.

The car will be here by the end of August but, with petrol prices sky-rocketing does the Laura RS make any sense in today’s environment. Well, those who really don’t have to worry about their monthly fuel bills would go for it, no doubt. But, the car might not bring in volumes for the automaker. We think, Skoda has delayed the launch of the Laura RS a bit too much. However, the RS is available with both diesel as well as petrol engines but India will only get the petrol motor.

Now, Skoda will price the RS above its current range, for sure and what do you get for the money? The car was showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo and featured most of the go faster bits that we’ve seen on the old Octavia RS. A boot spoiler, subtle body kit and lots of RS badges. A three-spoke steering wheel, steel pedals and a few bits of chrome here and there will make up the interior. A bigger set of rims will round-off the exterior styling of the car.
