Running rings around the Honda Accord. That is exactly what the Skoda Superb has been doing over the past few months as the  blend of style, spaciousness an a diesel engine has seen the Superb decimate the Accord at the hustings. Skoda India however has seen the Superb’s sales dipping over the last three months. Hence, the budget brand from Volkswagen AG wants to make its flagship car much more accessible to a wider section of the Indian car buying populace by effecting a considerable price cut that will give the Superb sales a shot in the arm.

Befitting its status as Skoda’s flagship car, the Skoda Superb has hitherto been available in a single trim though three engine options, a 1.8 TSI petrol, a 3.2 V6 Petrol and a 2 Liter TDI diesel have been there among the pickings. Before Christmas this year. Skoda Auto will unveil an LoCo Elegance variant of the Superb, which will be priced a full 1.4 Lakh Rupees lower than the existing base 1.8 TSI engined petrol Superb. This model, which will retail for INR 17 Lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi, is expected to make the Superb, well, excuse us for the pun superb value for money.

This announcement was made by Thomas Keuhl, Board Member of Skoda at the 8th anniversary celebrations  of the popular NDTV Car & Bike Show. Expect toned down interiors and a few bells and whistles going out of the window for Skoda to arrive at the LoCo Superb. Even so, the Accord might have tough times ahead as the base petrol 1.8 TSI Superb with the manual transmission has enough style, space and performance to give the Accord a serious run for the money unless Honda comes up with the so called “increased localization” or perhaps a diesel heart for the Accord.
