Ssangyong’s SUV range will be launched in India during 2012-13!

After Mahindra showcased its South Korean acquisition Ssangyong’s SUV range at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo, the firm also made an important announcement that it will be until the middle of 2012 when the Ssangyong range of SUVs will arrive into the Indian car market. The Ssangyong range of SUVs will be positioned above the Mahindra range of SUVs including the recently launched and hot selling XUV500, which currently is(and will continue to be for a while) Mahindra’s flagship SUV.

Mahindra showcased both the Rexton and the Korando SUVs at the Auto Expo, along with the Actyon pick up and XIV-1 SUV concept. First up for an Indian launch is the Rexton SUV, which has Mercedes Benz underpinnings. A 2.7 liter common rail, turbocharged engine will power the Rexton, and will produce a peak power of 182 Bhp and a peak torque of 402 Nm. This SUV will seat seven and is expected to be Mahindra’s product to take on the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and the new Ford Endeavour.

The Ssangyong Rexton SUV is not a crossover and will come with four wheel drive option. In other words, this is one SUV that can get down and dirty when required. The Rexton will be assembled in India, at Mahindra’s Chakan plant through completely knocked down kits that will be imported into India from South Korea. Mahindra will sell the Ssangyong range through its existing range of Mahindra dealerships and distribution muscle spread across the length and breadth of the country.

Coming to the other Ssangyong products that were displayed at the Auto Expo, the Rexton E is an electric vehicle variant of the Rexton Crossover SUV and this product could be launched in India sometime in 2013. The Actyon Sports pick up though, might not make it to Indian shores as the market for high end pick up trucks in India is almost non existent. The XIV-1 concept is a compact crossover which is still at a conceptual stage and so is the ICEV2 Crossover.
