The 2011 Suzuki Swift will debut in India as the new Maruti Suzuki Swift in the next few of months, and will come in both petrol and diesel engined versions. The car meanwhile, has been selling quite well in European markets for quite some time now. The latest update that the Euro spec Suzuki Swift Diesel has got is a start-stop system made by Bosch, which was previously available only on the Swift Petrol.

What this start-stop system aims to do is, it plans to make the already frugal Swift Diesel even more frugal. Currently, the Suzuki Swift Diesel, which delivers about 17 KMPL, is set to increase that number to a whopping 24.4 KMPL, with the addition of the Start-Stop system, of course all these numbers in European driving conditions.

Now if you’re wondering what a exactly Start-Stop system is, it is a system which turns your car’s engine off when you are stationary for more than 10 seconds, in say a traffic jam. Then, when you want to get going, the engine turns itself on seamlessly as your foot touches the accelerator pedal. Thereby, this system reduces fuel wastage when the car is stationary.

On whether this system would work well in Indian conditions is something that really needs to be debated as Indian stop-go traffic in sultry weather conditions often means that you need the air conditioning on, and the thus the engine running always to stay comfortable in the car. Indian traffic conditions, being vastly different from that of Europe might thus not really suit the Start-Stop system. So, don’t expect Maruti to outfit the new Indian Swifts this system anytime too soon.
