Second lot of Tata Nano will be 10-15% costlier, bookings to open in late 2010
Plenty of eager first time car buyers were disappointed when they couldn’t get a Tata Nano allotted for themselves. Now, Tata Motors has just announced that bookings for the second batch of Tata Nanos will begin sometime in late 2010.
To facilitate quicker deliveries of the second batch of Nanos, Tata Motors is increasing production capacity at it’s Pantnagar plant to 200 cars a day. Also, prospective Nano buyers will be able to take a test drive of the Nano at their nearest Tata dealers shortly. The price of the second batch of Nanos will be 10-15% higher than the first batch.
While this won’t deter too many people wanting a Nano, it could however result in the Nano’s price breaching the INR Two Lakh Rupee mark for the top end LX variant. This price rise is mainly due to the increase in raw material and labor costs over the past year.
Meanwhile, this price hike could also result in watered down offerings from other prominent small car makers like Maruti and Hyundai to launch watered down variants of their existing cars like the Maruti Alto and the Hyundai Santro Xing to take on the Tata Nano at the INR 2 Lakh plus price point.
