In the next few weeks, General Motors India will launch the Sail sedan, which is a sedan version of the recently launched Sail hatchback. GM India has just teased the Sail sedan on its official website, signifying that the launch is just around the corner. The Sail sedan will be GM India’s first launch in 2013. The Sail sedan will be followed by the Chevrolet Enjoy MPV. The Enjoy MPV will battle the likes of the Toyota Innova and the Mahindra Xylo. Coming back to the Sail sedan, the car will share its engines with its hatchback sibling.
Both petrol and turbo diesel engines will be offered on the Sail sedan. The petrol engine is the 1.2 liter, naturally aspirated SMARTECH motor that outputs a peak power of 86 PS while peak torque is rated at 113 Nm. This petrol engine, which is mated t to a five speed manual gearbox also powers other cars like the Chevrolet Beat and Sail hatchbacks. The 1.3 turbo diesel engine outputs 77 Bhp-210 Nm and is also mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. Given that both the Sail hatchback and sedan share engines and many other parts including the interiors, expect a competitive price tag for the sedan variant of the car.
The car comes with Chinese underpinnings as it was first developed by General Motors’ Chinese partner SAIC mainly for domestic market. Both the hatchback and sedan variants of the Sail have been hot sellers in China. Like the Sail hatchback, the sedan variant of this car will get ABS and Twin Airbags on the top end variant. The Sail sedan replaces the Aveo sedan as GM India’s entry level C-Segment sedan. The car will compete with the likes of the Toyota Etios, the Tata Manza and the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire.
Compared to its competition, the Chevrolet Sail sedan is a much more proportionate looking car, what with the boot integration of the car being carried out tastefully. So, looks wise the Sail sedan manages to tick all the right boxes. However, the interiors of the Chevrolet Sail sedan give away its low cost underpinnings. To make a dent on the sales of the Maruti Dzire, GM India will have to price the Sail sedan very competitively. Expect the 2013 Chevrolet Sail sedan to make its debut in India over the next couple of weeks.
