Skoda’s latest big bet, the 2013 MQB platform based Octavia, will offer plenty of choice for the car buyer. The 2013 Octavia will have no less than 8 turbocharged engine options lined up. That all the engines are turbocharged gives a glimpse of the future. Owing to tightening emission norms across most parts of the developed world and the higher demand on fuel efficiency, car makers have begun embracing turbochargers in a big way. Skoda is one such car maker and the 2013 Octavia’s engine line up reflects just that. The 2013 Octavia gets 4 turbo petrol and 4 turbo diesel engines.

The car will get a new series of turbo petrol engines that also get direct injection technology. All the turbo petrol engines that the Octavia will get belongs to Volkswagen’s EA211 line of powerplants. The EA211 series of turbo petrol engines are said to weigh lesser than the previous EA111 series. The entry level turbo petrol engines consist of a 1.2 Liter TSI unit and a GreenTec version of the 1.2 Liter TSI engine that delivers more power and torque while cutting down on fuel consumption. A 1.4 Liter TSI will power the middle order of the variant line while the top end 2013 Octavias will get the 1.8 Liter TSI motor.
1.2 Liter TSI Engine: 84 Bhp-160 Nm, 5.2l/100km and CO2 emissions of 119 grams/Km.
1.2 Liter TSI GreenTec Engine: 103 Bhp-175 Nm, 4.9l/100km and CO2 emissions of 114 grams/Km.
1.4 Liter TSI GreenTec Engine: 138 Bhp-250 Nm, 5.3l/100km and CO2 emissions of 121 grams/Km.
1.8 Liter TSI GreenTec Engine: 177 Bhp-250 Nm, 5.7l/100km and CO2 emissions of 131 grams/Km.
While the 1.2 Liter TSI base petrol engine gets a five speed manual gearbox, the more powerful 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI motor get 6 speed manual and 7 speed dual clutch DSG automatic gearboxes as options. The top end 1.8 Liter TSI motor though, is available only with the 7 speed DSG automatic gearbox. Coming to turbo diesel power, the 2013 Octavia gets two turbo diesel engines available in four states of tune. Both the turbo diesel engines come from the Volkswagen group’s EA288 platform.
1.6 Liter TDI Turbo Diesel Engine: 89 Bhp-250 Nm, 4.1l/100km and CO2 emissions of 109 grams/Km.
1.6 Liter GreenTec TDI Turbo Diesel Engine: 103 Bhp-250 Nm, 3.9l/100km and CO2 emissions of 99 grams/Km.
1.6 Liter GreenLine TDI Turbo Diesel Engine: 109 Bhp-250 Nm, 3.4l/100km and CO2 emissions of 89 grams/Km.
2.0 Liter GreenTec TDI Turbo Diesel Engine: 148 Bhp-320 Nm, 4.5l/100km and CO2 emissions of 119 grams/Km.
The base and GreenTec variants of the 1.6 Liter turbo diesel engine come with 5 speed manual and 7 speed DSG dual clutch automatic gearbox options. The 1.6 Liter GreenLine motor gets a 6 speed manual gearbox. The 2 Liter TDI engine gets a 6 speed manual and 6 speed DSG dual clutch gearbox options. Skoda has outfitted all GreenTec engines with Start-Stop technology. India is expected to get the 1.8 Liter TSI petrol motor and the 2 Liter TDI turbo diesel engine.
