Apart from a few rumblings emerging every now and then about a Sub-Innova MPV from Toyota from various sources, not much has been forthcoming from the Japanese automaker itself. Now, we just caught AutoCarIndia’s Editor Hormazd Sorabjee tweeting that a Multi Purpose Vehicle(MPV) based on the Toyota Etios is indeed on the cards.
This sounds pretty plausible considering the fact that there is a huge gap between the Etios Sedan and the Innova in Toyota’s portfolio and also that the ultra successful Qualis was never replaced by the Innova, as the latter directly sat one segment higher than the Qualis right from it’s launch.
Seemingly so, Toyota has, for long ignored this very lucrative, high volume entry level MPV segment and an Etios based MPV could be another ig volumes puller for the Japanese automaker who has very aggressive expansion plans for India. Also, since the ETIOS platform is designed as a low cost, highly versatile one, an MPV spawning out of the platform isn’t very unlikely.
Other details remain unknown at the moment but we anticipate that Toyota most certainly would launch the MPV with a diesel engine that could be shared with the Etios Sedan. Also, the name of the ETIOS platform MPV could be the Toyota Avanza, as this is one existing Toyota MPV, that sells in toyota’s south east asian markets, which is due for a major upgrade very soon.
Things as they stand now seem to be hotting up in the Indian MPV space, with the Tata Manza platform all set to spawn a 7 Seater MPV along with Maruti planning to launch it’s very own RIII MPV soon.
