Toyota Etios Sedan and Liva Hatchback may get diesel engines by the 2011 end or early 2012!

Toyota Kirloskar Motors Limited, it seems is not resting on it’s laurels even as the Etios Sedan continues to clock solid numbers even as it is available only in petrol engine guise. While a lot of our readers are eager to know when Toyota will come out diesel engined variants for both the Etios Sedan as well as the Luva Hatchback, we have some good news for you. Toyota is all set to usher in diesel power for both the Etios Sedan and the Liva Hatchback by the end of this year or early next year.

This news was relayed to us by Sirish Chandran, the editor of Overdrive who recently participated in a media drive of the Toyota Etios Liva Hatchback, which will be launched later this month. The diesel engine to be used on the Etios Sedan and the Liva Hatchback is expected to be the same 1.4 Liter CRDI turbo diesel engine that does duty in the Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel. However, to keep costs low, the variable geometry turbo of the engine could be replaced by a fixed geometry unit.

So, expect about 70-80 Bhp instead of the 90 Bhp that the Altis Diesel comes with along with about 180-190 Nm of torque. We’re hoping that Toyota does something about the annoying turbo lag which is a major bummer in the Altis Diesel when it plonks the diesel engine in the engine bays of the Etios Sedan and Liva Hatchback. Other details like pricing and what the diesel engined models of the Etios Sedan and Liva Hatchback will feature remain unknown at the moment.

Considering Toyota’s killer pricing on the Etios Sedan to bring in the volumes, expect the diesel engined variants to be priced extremely competitively and this definitely could give the competition the shudders as Indians typically love Brand Toyota and the quality Toyota cars come with. Currently, trial production of the diesel engined Etios Sedan and the Liva Hatchback has already begun and it is only a matter of time before Toyota launches these cars.
