Ah! How we wish the Toyota Etios Sedan is remotely as sexy as the model prancing around it. Wishful thinking you may call it, but that brings us straight to the subject. What what Toyota thinking when they decided to make the Etios Sedan look more like what the Mahindra-Renault Logan should have been in the first place. And for this design, Toyota claims to have engaged 2000 bright minds working for the better part of two whole years. We seriously think that frugal accountants, not designers have put the Etios Sedan together. C’mon Toyota, you certainly can do better than that.

Like us, the Indian blogosphere too, has been acrid in it’s remarks about the Toyota Etios Sedan with some incensed car nuts even writing off Toyota and predicting a fate similar to that of the Honda Jazz. All this, even before the Etios Sedan’s official launch scheduled to happen late in 2010. We however won’t jump the gun and write Toyota off. Why? Simply because we still remember the Toyota Qualis which sold like hot cakes even when it looked like a breadbox straight out of a 1970s car brochure. A much better looking car, the Tata Sumo’s sales were totally obliterated and the Tata Sumo has never recovered from that nasty blow till date.

Such was Toyota’s stellar quality and reliability that even today, we have plenty of examples of the erstwhile Toyota Qualis going very strong with just scheduled oil changes and general maintenance. This, with many Qualis’ clocking more than half a million kilometers on the harsh Indian terrain. All this discourse from our end, is to simply get the point across that in India, quality and reliability certainly are more valued that good looks.

Judging Toyota’s history in India, the Etios Sedan will see bulletproof reliability backed up with great quality and an extremely competent after sales service. This, along with the hallowed Toyota badge( Do we even need to mention how Indians adore brand Toyota) on the bonnet could prove to be the strong points of the Toyota Etios sedan. Initially, the Toyota Etios Sedan will be launched with a 1500cc petrol engine while diesel engines may be on the anvil too.

All said and done, the Toyota Etios Sedan could still fail at the market. Fail, it certainly could as Toyota is mulling a price point of almost INR 10 Lakh for this mid size sedan. Now, for all it’s staid looks, we certainly don’t want the Toyota Etios sedan to end up the way the Honda Jazz did because of the outrageously high price.

Wake up Toyota, wake up and smell the coffee. We are almost ten years ahead of the Qualis and the Indian car market, along with the Indian car buyers has matured a great deal.

    As commented, i completely agree that it looks like a improved version of the LOGON. I do not understand when they had the stunning looking YARIS which was a big hit why did they come up with this totally unispiring ugly looking model ?
