At the Detroit Auto Show in January, Toyota will launch the Prius C or Aqua Compact in the United States.  This hybrid is Toyota’s most fuel efficient hybrid ever and the Japanese car maker claims a whopping mileage of 35 Kmpl for the hatchback, a new variant in the Prius line up. The Prius C will continue to feature the same Toyota Synergy Drive technology as the Prius sedan with a petrol engine-electric motor layout for propulsion. On the Prius C though, the petrol motor will be downsized.

The Prius C will get a 1.5 Liter petrol engine instead of the the 1.8 Liter unit that is found on the Prius sedan. The petrol engine on Prius C is said to be good enough for 72 Bhp while the electric motor is expected to put out about 60 Bhp. The Prius C was first showcased at this year’s Detroit Motor Show, alongside the Prius V and the facelifted Prius Sedan model. In 2012, the Prius C will be launched in most developed markets.

For India, Toyota will launch the facelifted Prius hybrid sedan at the upcoming 2012 Indian Auto Expo. The Prius hybrid sedan is the only hybrid car model that Toyota sells in India, more as a brand builder than a real volumes car as the cost of hybrid technology still remains quite expensive when compared to the regular internal combustion engine powered automobiles. That said, the 2012 Auto Expo will be witness to a number of electric and hybrid car concepts by Indian manufacturers.

Mahindra will showcase the production ready version of the Mahindtra Reva NXR while it will also showcase a concept electric car based on the Verito C segment sedan. Tata Motors will also pull off a surprise of sorts, as the automaker plans to unveil the Manza Hybrid concept at the exposition. In the coming years, hybrid cars in India are expected to eventually join the mainstream automobile market.

At present the hybrid technology is either at concept stage or is prohibitively expensive. With mass adoption, prices are bound to come down. But as long as fossil fuel is available and still affordable, adoption of hybrid technology will not become reality. I wish we run out of fossil fuel sooner, not to adopt hybrid tech but because enough damage has already been done to our environment (greehouse gas effect).
