Toyota considering the recall of the Toyota Prius Hybrid in the US, No recalls in India
The Toyota recall saga is deepening amidst reports that the Toyota Prius, a flagship car representing Toyota’s engineering might and innovation, could be recalled. This latest recall if effected would be due to potential braking issues on the Toyota Prius Hybrid.
Some 2010 Prius Hybrid owners have complained that their Prius’s brakes do not engage immediately as they depress the brake pedal and also that the brakes have an inconsistent feel. Following these growing complaints, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it would assess the scope of the problem in the Prius and verify the safety impact of the same.
While Toyota has fixed braking issues with a software remap on the 2010 models, previous years’ models have received no such remap to address this potentially dangerous issue. Meanwhile, US Congressional investigators expanded their review of Toyota to include the Prius as California Rep. Darrell Issa, the ranking Republican on the House of Representatives Oversight Committee, asked Toyota for records on its Prius brakes.
Another recall could seriously dent Toyota’s credibility in the short term and sales in the long term in the very critical US auto market. This could boost the sales of Toyota’s Japanese and Korean rivals who haven’t announced any significant recall so far.
Notably, Toyota Kirloskar India who just launched the Toyota Prius Hybrid in India at the Auto Expo have not announced any recall as yet. Talking to IndianCarsBikes, a spokesperson from Toyota reiterated that they have received no complaint from the Indian models of the Prius so far and that the Toyota Prius being sold in India will not be recalled as of now.
