7 New and Stunning SUV cars getting launched in India in 2014
Why Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) ?
- The bigger, taller or more butch looking vehicle gets right of way in India. You either bully or get bullied. Imagine yourself as an auto driver who spots a fast approaching Mahindra Thar in the rear view mirror. How do you feel now?
- You sit higher. So, you get a bird’s eye view of what’s going on in the front and this helps you plan your next squeeze in traffic. You also look down upon sedans and hatchbacks.
- You live in a land where speed breakers are as tall as the Himalayas and potholes that can put the moon’s surface to shame. More ground clearance is always handy. And you hate your car scraping.
Why not SUV?
- You like taking corners like Mr Michael Schumacher.
- You want that extra kilometer per liter of diesel.
- You love cars that sit low and that feel properly sporty, cars that don’t look like boxes on wheels.
OK, now decide. SUV or sedan/hatchback? If SUV, read on. If hatchback/sedan, still read on. Your friends will love you for the gyan you can give when someone asks you a SUV question.
Fiat Punto Cross
No, the Fiat Punto Cross is not an SUV. It’s a jacked up hatchback alright. We’re putting it in this list as even the stock Fiat Grande Punto comes with a 195 mm ground clearance. Well, that number is more than what the Mahindra Scorpio, Bolero or XUV500 offer in the ground clearance department. In a Punto Cross, you’ll never dread a speed breaker again.
And the Punto Cross comes with cladding and other butch bits to make it feel like a proper SUV. You even get to corner hard and not bother about rolling over. Since the Punto Cross isn’t much more than a masculine version of the Grande Punto, the engines and gearboxes on the Punto Cross will be similar to what the Grande Punto gets.
Presently, the Grande Punto is available with 1.2 liter and 1.4 liter petrol, and 1.3 liter diesel engines. All engines get 5 speed manual gearboxes. Since the Punto Cross is more of a butch looking raised hatchback than a real SUV, the front wheel drive layout will continue.
When is it coming? Mid 2014. What’s the price? In the range of Rs. 7 lakhs.

Mahindra Scorpio Facelift
The Scorpio is one of India’s largest selling SUVs. To keep it that way, Mahindra has decided to upgrade the Scorpio by a facelift. The facelifted model will be as menacing as the present Scorpio. Mahindra dealership salesmen need something more convincing to make you buy the Scorpio, don’t they? So, Mahindra will load the SUV with its latest gimmicky features and make you beta test it. The 2.2 liter mHawk engine is what will continue on the facelifted Scorpio.
The engine makes 120 Bhp and 290 Nm. As of now, Mahindra offers two more engines for the Scorpio. A 2.6 liter CRDe diesel engine is offered on the Getaway model and this engine pumps out 115 Bhp and 280 Nm. The other engine is the 2.5 liter M2DICR diesel motor that pumps out 75 Bhp and 220 Nm. All engines of the Scorpio get a 5 speed manual gearbox as standard. The top end Scorpio also gets a 6 speed automatic gearbox.
When is it coming? Festive season of 2014 which means October-November. What’s the price? It should start from Rs. 8 lakhs.

Renault Duster Facelift
How do you make a good seller a better seller? By changing a headlamp here and a tail lamp there and then calling it an all new model. Well, the Duster Facelift is a little more than that. The SUV will get new double barrel headlamps, a new grille and front bumper. The SUV’s roof rails and alloy wheels have been refreshed.
Moving into the SUV, you’ll find a new instrument cluster, steering mounted controls, a new center console and a center arm rest. Don’t expect new engines or gearboxes. If we get lucky, Renault India may add a four wheel drive system. The Duster Facelift will continue to offer petrol and diesel engines.
Renault sells the Duster in India with 2 engines, a 1.6 liter petrol and a 1.5 liter K9K diesel. The 1.6 liter petrol engine of the Duster manages to output 99 PS-140 Nm. The diesel engined version of the Duster gets two states of tune, 85 PS-200 Nm and 110 PS-240 Nm.

Hyundai Santa Fe
The new Santa Fe is coming on the 6th of February 2014. Hyundai has given its most expensive product for India a big makeover. The styling is now inspired by the Storm Edge design. The soft curves of the previous version get replaced by sharper and angular lines.
The interiors also get a completely new design, again inspired by Hyundai’s latest design language. The Santa Fe will be diesel powered with a 2.2 liter engine that pumps out 197 Bhp and 420 Nm. 6 speed manual and automatic transmissions will be offered with two wheel drive and all wheel drive options.

Suzuki SX4 Crossover
The XA-Alpha, Maruti’s compact SUV, is yet to make the switch from concept to production. To keep Maruti Suzuki’s SUV line up alive, the SX4 crossover will arrive. The SX4 crossover will seat 5 adults and is a jacked up version of the next generation SX4 hatchback. Along with the jacking up, Suzuki designers have also given the SX4 Crossover the looks of a soft roader with just the right amount of aggression.
The car will get a new 1.6 liter Fiat turbo diesel engine and this finally means that Maruti will break away from using just the 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet diesel engine on all its diesel cars. The petrol engine on the SX4 crossover will displace 1.6 liter. The SX4 Crossover will square off with the Renault Duster and the Ford EcoSport.
When is it coming? End of 2014. What’s the price? Rs. 8-9 lakhs.
Skoda Yeti Facelift
Some SUVs are getting more butch than ever before, trying to scare children silly. Others are actually trying to please families by having smiley faces and looking all warm and fuzzy. The facelifted Yeti wants to please families and hence sell more. Remember, buying a car now is more of a collective decision than before. The Skoda Yeti Facelift is available in two versions abroad, City and Outdoor.
Skoda India should give us the Outdoor version, which looks more like an SUV than a soft roader. The 2 liter turbo diesel engine of the Yeti will continue unchanged. This 140 Bhp and 320 Nm engine will get a 6 speed manual gearbox, all wheel drive and a host of other electronic aids to get you out of sticky situations.
When is it coming? Early 2014. What’s the price? Rs. 15 lakhs.
Renault Koleos Facelift
The Koleos crossover has received a makeover. The new version features such small changes that only Renault sales men and car nuts would notice. Blacked out front grille, a bigger Renault logo, new alloy wheels, chromed protective strips are four new items on the Koleos facelift. Inside the crossover, you get a new media system called R-Link that is accessed through a touch screen. A major change in the 2014 Koleos is in the engine department.
The SUV will get a more powerful version of the 2 liter DCi diesel engine. The more powerful engine will pump out 171 Bhp and 360 Nm. The SUV will get cheaper as the engine is assembled in India. Also, the Koleos will now lose the 6 speed automatic gearbox for a manual unit, another cost cutting measure. Apart from the all wheel drive version, Renault India will also see a 2 wheel drive version of the SUV.

The automatic transmission might be available only on the top end model that also gets all wheel drive. According to Cartoq, the facelifted Aria will get smoked headlamps, new tail lamps and 6 captain seats. The 2.2 liter diesel engine will get more powerful, with power and torque figures rated at 153 Bhp and 400 Nm.
