Volkswagen Up! 5 door hatchback patent drawings surface and boy, does it look like a Cross Up!
Currently, Volkswagen India is contemplating whether launching the Up! hatchback in India makes economic sense, but if it does go ahead and decide to launch the Up! small car in India, it will be the five door version. When the Up! was unveiled at Frankfurt last year, Volkswagen also showed a Cross Up! concept, which essentially was a jacked up, five door version of the Up!. This very car has now surfaced in patent drawings filed by Volkswagen at the European Patent Office.
So, it very well might mean that the CrossUp! concept is what the 5 door version of the Up! will be. Like the Up!, the CrossUP! featured the 3 cylinder, 1 liter petrol engine in two states of tune, 59 Bhp and 75 Bhp. Earlier today, we also carried a story about Volkswagen delivering a Electric only version of the Up! come 2014. As of now, it remains uncertain whether the five door Up! will also see an electric offering.
The CrossUp! could make a bunch of sense for developing markets, where five door hatchbacks are the norm. For now, the Up! is sold only in the European markets as a low price and frugal city car that is also low on tail pipe emissions. We say, plonk down the twin pot, 800cc turbodiesel engine that Volkswagen has used on the XL1, into the CrossUp! and launch it in India. All said, a jacked up version of the Up!, in lines of the CrossUp! will be a good choice for India, especially when the going gets rough. Yet, it remains to be seen whether Volkswagen will launch the Up! in India in the first place.
