The Volkswagen Up! with four doors is called the Cross Up! Concept

What happens when the Volkswagen Up! Hatchback gets two extra doors, some rugged body cladding and half an inch more ground clearance? It becomes the Volkswagen Cross Up! Concept. That is right, Volkswagen has just pulled the wraps off the four door version of the Volkswagen Up! called the Cross Up! and this is what we’ll be getting in India, perhaps minus the body cladding.

The rest of the car’s specification is bog similar to the Volkswagen Up! which means that it gets a 1 liter three pot petrol mill producing 59 or 75 Bhp, depending on the state of tune it is in. The Volkswagen Up! will also get an electric motor in 2012 and that motor might find its way onto the Cross UP! Concept as well.

Meanwhile, the Volkswagen Up! Hatchback is one very important car for Volkswagen, with some even likening this tiny little car to the iconic Volkswagen Beetle in terms of mass appeal and affordability. The Volkswagen Up! will lead the German automajor’s push into emerging markets as well as in developed car markets like Europe.

Armed with Volkswagen’s fuel sipping, emission cuttingĀ  BlueMotion technology, the petrol powered Up! is touted to deliver over 24 Kmpl and carbon emissions as low as 44 grams/km this will be a major selling point of this budget small car. A diesel engine though remain surprisingly absent from the Up!’s portfolio for now.

Suzuki seems to have just showed Volkswagen the door, ending the nearly two year long, much touted alliance and the Volkswagen Up! is expected to lead the German Automaker’s fightback in Suzuki’s biggest and most lucrative car market, India, where the Up! will take on Suzuki’s best seller, the Maruti Suzuki Alto.

Fiat, in the meanwhile will have a big reason to worry as the Volkswagen Up! will gun straight for the Fiat Panda Hatchback that Fiat had been pinning its hope on to do well in the European market. Meanwhile, we feel that the Volkswagen Cross Up! would just be the perfect entry level Volkswagen for India, with all that extra ground clearance, what say you?
