After Hyundai and GM India, now it is the turn of Volkswagen India to announce a price hike. The company has decided to jack up the price of their small hatchback – Polo, by 2.9%. While the price hike is effective from January 1, 2011, customers who book before that date will get the car at the present price. This is usually a ploy by the manufacturers to delay any price rise till the year turns over as December is usually a lean month for car sales with folks usually prefer to postpone car purchases to the next year. The Volkswagen Polo has had considerable success in India since it was launched in March 2010, and in around just 9 months it has sold more than 17,000 units across the country.

Like other industry players, Volkswagen India also attributed the price rise reasons to the same very thing: increase in input costs. VW India Director, Mr. Neeraj Garg, had this to say this when quizzed about the price rise, “We have been faced with a constant rise in input cost over the past several months and have tried our best to absorb it. However, in order to continue to maintain our quality standards that our customers expect from us we have had to increase the price by a small percentage.” Volkswagen, on its part is determined to be more aggressive in their marketing and see to it that this unavoidable price rise does not negatively impact their good market run in any way. What we’d like to see however is some real improvement on the after sales service front, an area where Volkswagen India has come in for some criticism from many of it’s existing customers.
