Volkswagen India considering a sub-4 meter Vento based compact sedan; Compact SUV and MPV also under consideration

Volkswagen’s PQ25 platform, the platform that underpins the likes of the Polo hatchback and the Vento sedan, could spawn a range of new cars with innovative body styles. 2014 and beyond is when these new cars could debut in India. Under consideration are not one, not two, but three new cars spawned out of the PQ25 platform. One such car is the compact sedan version of the Vento. The Vento could get the chop shop treatment, to end up with a small boot and a sub 4 meter length. The Vento compact sedan will seek to take advantage of the excise duty benefits conferred upon sub-4 meter cars sold in India.

Other details of the Vento compact sedan remain sketchy at best. The AutocarIndia report, which is carrying buzz about the new Volkswagen models based on the PQ25 platform, puts a 2014 launch time frame for the Vento compact sedan. Now, that’s a good year away. If indeed Volkswagen shortens the length of the Vento, expect the compact sedan’s engines to be new items as well. A 1.2 Liter TSI turbo petrol engine and the 1.5 Liter TDI turbo diesel engine are two distinct possibilities for the Vento based compact sedan as Volkswagen needs to adhere to the 1.2 Liter limit for petrol engines and the 1.5 Liter limit for diesel engines in order to quality for the excise duty benefits.

The other two body styles that the PQ25 platform might underpin includes a compact SUV and a MPV. Compact cars, or cars measuring under 4 meters in length, are big sellers in the Indian car market. In fact 70% of the cars sold in the country measure in at under 4 meters in length. While most cars under 4 meters are hatchbacks, also known as small cars in India, there’s a growing tribe of cars with different body styles that also measure under 4 meters in length. The compact sedan class is one such segment that is seeing a slew of car models being readied up.

The coming months will see no less than three compact sedan launches: The Honda Brio Amaze, the Mahindra Verito Compact and the facelifted Tata Indigo eCS. Another hot segment in India’s compact car category is that of SUVs. While we already have compact SUVs like the Premier Rio and the Mahindra Quanto, new launches like the Ford EcoSport, the Honda Compact SUV and the Maruti Suzuki XA-Alpha are scheduled to be launched in India.
