Volkswagen Jetta TSI petrol spotted testing in India!
When Volkswagen India pulled the wraps off the Passat many months ago, the automaker surprised one too many with a single diesel fuel option for the Passat with only the 2 Liter, 170 Bhp, common rail turbodiesel engine making it into the equation. A few months down the line, even the Jetta was launched with a diesel engine option with no petrol engine making it to the final spec sheet.
Now though, the folks at OnCars have spotted a Volkswagen Jetta TSI doing what appears to be routine testing on the Mumbai-Pune expressway. The dead giveaway of the Jetta featuring a petrol engine is the TSI badging that is prominently displayed on the test mule’s boot. For the European markets, the Volkswagen Jetta comes with three petrol engine options with capacities ranging from 1.2 to 2 Liters.
All three petrol engines are turbocharged and feature direct injection. For India though, economies of scale will dictate that the Jetta TSI, if it ever makes it to serial production, use the 1.8 Liter, 160 Bhp-250 Nm TSI engine that incidentally is also used on the Skoda Laura, the Skoda Yeti and the Skoda Laura. While the Euro spec Jetta petrols come with choices of 6 and 7 speed DSG gearboxes, expect the Indian version to feature a six speed manual gearbox and a 6 speed DSG automatic gearbox.
This, as the Jetta petrol could be positioned both as the entry level and top end Jetta model. All said, it still remains uncertain whether Volkswagen will launch the petrol variant of the Jetta in India as petrol cars do not make any sense given the current economic climate prevailing in the country along with the sky rocketing petrol prices. In fact, this was the very reason why Volkswagen India launched both the Passat and Jetta in diesel only guises. All said, stranger things have happened before.
