Volkswagen planning a sub-Tiguan crossover; Should India get something like that?
That the Mahindra XUV500 Crossover came, saw and conquered is for everyone to see. More importantly, the XUV500 has demonstrated that a market for a well priced Crossover does exist in India and that such a crossover could be a good alternative to the likes of D-segment sedans. While it would be far fetched to call this latest plan of Volkswagen, to develop a Sub-Tiguan crossover as a response to the Mahindra XUV500, it does leave open up exciting possibilities for the Teuton brand for India as well as other emerging car markets across the world.
And this is exactly what Volkswagen’s chief of design, Walter de’ Silva, seems to think about the sub-Tiguan crossover, when he said and we quote,
Crossovers demand is expanding from mature markets to emerging markets and we have to cover this growing appetite with a multilateral expansion in the offer of our brands.
India being an emerging market could probably be in the scheme of things for the sub-Tiguan crossover although it is quite premature to speculate on whether Volkswagen India will bring the sub-Tiguan crossover to India and if so, when it will do so. Nevertheless, we think that a Volkswagen crossover positioned bang in the middle of the Indian D-segment sedan space would ruffle up a few feathers and give the likes of the Mahindra XUV500 SUV some stuff to think about. Competition, as we all know is the best thing that happened to this world after say, the invention of the wheel.
We’re very eager to hear what you think about a sub-Tiguan crossover for the Indian market, through the comments section below.
