It won’t be until 2013 before Volkswagen India will give Indians a taste of their latest small car in town, the Volkswagen Up! Hatchback, which is Volkswagen’s least priced entry level car. The Volkswagen Up! Hatchback, which has been mainly designed as a city hatchback that can seat four adults has been receiving praise for being a car with quality levels defying the low price at which it is priced at.

For the Indian market, expect the Volkswagen Up! to be priced many thousands lower than the Polo hatchback at around INR 3.5 Lakhs, to form Volkswagen’s entry level model in India, taking on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki A-Star and the higher priced variant of the Hyundai Eon. Rebadged versions of the Volkswagen Up! also is available as the Skoda CitiGO Hatchback and the SEAT Mii Hatchback, both of which may arrive into India sometime in 2013 or later.

The Volkswagen Up! is yet to get a diesel heart even though is is being sold in one of the biggest diesel engined car markets in the world, Europe. That said, Volkswagen might offer a diesel engined Up! in the future as the twin cylinder 800cc common rail, turbo diesel engine derived from the bigger 1.2 Liter TDI diesel engine for long has been touted as the diesel engine that the Up! wll feature in the future.

Currently, the Volkswagen Up! comes with a choice of two petrol engines, albeit of the same capacity but in two different states of tune. The 800cc, three cylinder petrol engine is available in power outputs of 59 Bhp and 75 Bhp, along with a start-stop system to minimize emissions and maximize fuel economy. High fuel economy of over 20 KMPL is the highlight of this engine which is mated to a five speed manual transmission. Volkswagen also showcased a jacked up version of the Up! called the CrossUp! at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, a car that could just be what the doctor ordered for Indian conditions.
